Andrew Bowerbank regularly draws from his diverse background in his efforts to engage community leaders and encourage energy & environmental conservation, and the adoption of climate change mitigation strategies. He has extensive entrepreneurial experience in business start-up including not-for-profit initiatives. As a published author, Mr. Bowerbank has had two of his books on Canada’s “best sellers” list.  In 2007, Mr. Bowerbank received the Leader of the Year award by Enerquality Corporation and the Ontario Home Builders Association for his contributions to sustainable community development and green home design.

Previous to his 2007 appointment to the World Green building Council, Mr Bowerbank was the Executive Director for the Toronto Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC). He has been directly involved in the development of the CaGBC since 2003 through various responsibilities including co-directing the Municipal Green Building Tool Kit project and sitting on the Executive Board for the Toronto Chapter. Mr. Bowerbank has also acted as a green building consultant for a number of high profile projects including:

  • The TRCA Restoration Services building -the first LEED platinum certified building in the province of Ontario, Canada.
  • The Building Trades Union Head Office.
  • The City of Vaughan Civic Centre -LEED gold target. 
  • The Humber College Arboretum project
  • The Kortright Vistors Centre –LEED Platinum target

Mr. Bowerbank’s secondment to the Toronto Chapter –CaGBC began in 2006 through a one year contract with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA). The TRCA is a leading Canadian organization with over 300 staff that oversees urban development surrounding the primary watersheds throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Acting as the Manager of Sustainable Development for the TRCA, Mr. Bowerbank directed a number of key initiatives including:

  • the Archetype Sustainable House National Design/Build Competition.
  • City of Vaughan Block 39 Project –The largest Energy Star community in Canada.
  • Green Building Strategies for High-Rise Residential Development –published document 2005.

In addition to his expertise in green building and sustainable community design, Mr. Bowerbank is a graduate from the University of Western Ontario’s Teachers College; a professor of design certified by the Ontario Ministry of Education; a member of the Ontario College of Teachers; and a national certified sports coach. He also holds an honors diploma in Industrial Design specializing in ergonomic science, materials and manufacturing processes, and transportation design. Mr. Bowerbank operated his own Toronto based design firm from 1994 to 2000 where his team specialized in green strategies for commercial interiors and custom furniture design. Prior to 1993, Mr. Bowerbank worked in the manufacturing sector as an engineering supervisor.
