This is part of a series of talks for Green Building Week hosted by Irish Green Building Council members. This talk is hosted by Ecocem. Ciara O'Conor of Emission zero will discuss embodied carbon in building materials. As buildings become more energy efficient and operational carbon emissions decrease, the  embodied carbon of the materials becomes more important to consider. This is particularly topical as embodied carbon data bases are likely to become a key criteria in Public Procurement as set out by the National action plan on Green public procurement. Ciara will give an introduction to this topic including key protocols, ISO 14064, PAS 2050, LCA carbon, and the ICE database.

Ciara O’Connor graduated in 2007 from Trinity College Dublin with an MSc in Environmental Science. She then went on to work in the UK for the Carbon Trust, an organisation funded by the UK Government to accelerate the move to a Low Carbon economy. Ciara worked for the Carbon Trust for three years on carbon reduction and legislative compliance issues before returning to Ireland. Ciara is now the Environmental Services Manager of Carbon Consultancy, EmissionZero, part of the Ecocem Group. Ciara is one of Ireland’s most highly qualified assessors having completed training in the application of the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064. She also has extensive experience developing bespoke Carbon Reduction Strategies.  Nimmerdor, het eerste massief passiefproject in Nederland

Recticel Insulation The Netherlands Europe Monday 19th of September 2011 Building Tour Icon
Time: 13:00 - 17:00
Location: Bouwplaats WoonEco2 Woningen en Nimmerdor Appartementen, Bakkersland 14, Grijpskerke
Expected Attendance:
Description:

Sika Nederland B.V. The Netherlands Europe Tuesday 20th of September 2011 Conference Icon

Location: Landgoed Zonnestraal, Hilversum
Expected Attendance:
Target Audience: aannemers, applicateurs, architecten, constructeurs, ingenieurs, projectontwikkelaars en onderzoek- en adviesbureaus
Description:

Description:

Description:

 Open huis - Watertoren Bussum

NIBE The Netherlands Europe Tuesday 20th of September 2011 Building Tour Icon
Time: 18:00 - 21:00
Location: Bussum
Expected Attendance:
Target Audience:
Description:

 Symposium ZND Dakbedekking

ZND Dakbedekking The Netherlands Europe Wednesday 21st of September 2011 Building Tour Icon,Conference Icon
Time: 13:00 - 17:00
Location: Eindhoven
Expected Attendance:
Target Audience: project ontwikkelaars, facilitair managers, architecten, VVE's, bouwbedrijven, gemeentes & provincies
Description:

Description: For the first of a series of monthly autumn discussion evenings at NHA, Bill Bordass will explain why building performance evaluation has become such a priority. As professionals, the concept should be nothing new to us, but it's too frequently forgotten as government industry and research policy have concentrated on rethinking construction, taking little or no account of how buildings actually work in use. Through the Usable Buildings Trust, Bill is encouraging users, managers and designers to realise the numerous benefits of the Soft Landings approach. It requires a step change in our attitude, but maybe that's what the profession needs for its survival.

This event is free to attend but numbers are limited. To book your place please contact Mona Heier m.heier@nicholashare.co.uk.

Domestic Embodied Carbon & Life Cycle Costing Decision Tool

BLP Insurance UK Europe Wednesday 21st of September 2011 Presentation
Time: 08.30 – 10.00
Location: London
Expected Attendance:
Target Audience:
Description: BLP Insurance is leading a TSB funded project, called "Butterfly", to deliver a Low Carbon Design & Decision Tool, in partnership with Willmott Dixon, UCL Energy Institute and University of Cambridge Centre for Sustainable Development. At this event, hosted at the offices of BLP Insurance, the project leaders will present on the development of the new tool. "Butterfly" will offer transparency of the effects of system and material choices, by associating those choices with relevant performance data. Ultimately, it will enable comparative decision-making of alternative designs based on attributes of life-cycle, operational energy and embodied carbon - the whole carbon cost, for new build and retro fit residential property schemes. The tool will be an evolution of BLP's successful Life Cycle Costing application, which integrates their construction durability database that has been built up over the last 25 years, and which is already in use amongst industry professionals looking to make design choices on the basis of life cycle cost. In addition to making evaluations based on a series of standard house types and components, the tool will be CAD compatible, enabling designers and developers to upload their own scheme specific designs into Butterfly which will generate the energy calculations and measure the design attributes against industry standards. The tool will enable designs to be modified to achieve optimum energy performance measured against capital and life cycle cost.
