WorldGBC Global Update: December 2013

Creating a Collective Plan

If our mission is to “transform the building sector towards sustainability,” how do we know when we get there? And what sort of time frame are we talking about?

Jane Henley shares new ideas and excitement from our recent session with 22 GBCs at Congress in South Africa. Learn more.

Congress Session Videos Now Available Online

With all of the sessions from Congress now available to watch online, you can experience the excitement and learning from our annual gathering, even if you couldn't make it to Cape Town.  It's just like being there! These are great tools to help develop your GBC. Thanks to our sponsor, Shaw Contract Group, you can check out our Congress resources page to watch videos and download presentations. Don't forget to visit our new GBC University page as well, with capacity building sessions from Congress and previous gatherings.

Green Buildings are Healthy Buildings - Get Involved!

The WorldGBC is embarking on the next phase of our work around the business case for green building: collaborating with industry, government and academia to translate the health and productivity benefits of green buildings into usable metrics and best practice guidance. We will be looking to our GBC members to pilot new metrics and provide case studies, so be on the look out for more information in early 2014. A few sponsorship spots are still available for interested companies and organisations. For more information, please contact Michelle Malanca.

Boost Your Social Media Skills and Maximise Your Impact

Is your GBC making the most of social media and using it efficiently and effectively? Would you like some help from an expert to raise your social media profile and start making more of an impact?  The WorldGBC is calling for expressions of interest from GBCs who would like to take part in social media training that is specifically tailored for what we do. More details will be coming soon, but if you would like to be involved in these sessions in early 2014, please let us know now! Contact Kim Surtees to register your interest.

And the Winners Are...

We're excited to announce the winners of the 2013 WorldGBC Government Leadership Awards, presented at COP-19 in Warsaw. The overall winner of ‘Best Green Building Policy’ was Vancouver, Canada, for its Greenest City 2020 Action Plan, an example of excellence in sustainable city policies. Also recognised was Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, which received a ‘Regional Leadership Award’ for the Estidama Pearl Rating System. Christchurch, New Zealand, was presented with an ‘Urban Regeneration Award’ for its policies and initiatives aimed at rebuilding sustainably after a series of devastating earthquakes. Seoul, Korea, received a ‘Climate Action Leadership Award’ for its comprehensive campaign to reduce energy consumption. Find out more about the awards and the winners, and download our awards publication here.

Global Coalition for Green Schools

The Global Coalition for Green Schools has officially launched! This network consists of green building councils and other like-minded organisations from around the world working at the grass-roots level to equip communities with the resources and support they need to transform their schools. Many of our GBCs are founding members of this initiative that aims to ensure every child learns in a green school within this generation. Find out more.

And don't forget to check out our People Profiles – meet and learn from members of our GBC network!
