There was no end-of-the-year slow down for the GBCs in the Africa Network. From Accra to Cape Town, the green building movement continues to grow.
The GBC Mauritius flew the banner for World Green Building Week (WGBW) and the Road to Rio+20 with a half-day workshop on the theme of Green Building in the New Green Economy. Speakers addressed relevant topics such as sustainable urban development, renewable energy and the business case for green building. The GBCM also marked WGBW with a tour of the Mauritius Commerical Bank at Ebene. Well done, GBCM!
On 10 November, the Ghana GBC held the first Green Star Accredited Professional Course in Ghana. Attended by 24 people and facilitated by Nicholas Mulvany and Andy Feldman, participants learned about the nine Green Star categories and how they apply to the Ghanaian context.
The next day, Mulvaney led a Green Star Assessors Workshop, an in-depth look at Green Star from an assessment perspective. Both courses represent important building blocks in the uptake of green building certification in Ghana.
The GBCSA held its 4th successful Convention and Exhibition in Cape Town in October, demonstrating the growing interest in sustainability and green buildings in Southern Africa. With over 900 delegates and 42 speakers, the conference had a range of plenary sessions and interactive breakaway sessions. International keynote speakers Jason McLennan, Vivian Loftness and David Waldren were high points.
The conference's “African Case Study Series” session featuring projects from South Africa, Ghana and Kenya and the “South African Green Homes” session were also well received and demonstrated the commitment of African professionals to going green. The GBCSA looks forward to an even bigger, better event next year!
In addition to events and activities being held by each council, an Africa Regional Network meeting was held in Toronto on 4 October, following the WorldGBC Congress.
At the meeting, Network members from Nigeria, Ghana, Mauritius and South Africa discussed ideas for sharing resources such as educational course material, as well as for collaboration, with an eye to addressing the crucial issue of greening low-income housing.
