With the UN Climate Conference, also known as COP-17, being held in Durban, South Africa, this year, the GBCSA team was very busy taking full advantage of the opportunities that it presented locally.

The GBCSA secured funding and subsequently retrofitted 30 low-income houses, an entire street, in Cato Manor, Durban - vastly improving the quality of life of the home owners involved and demonstrating the advantages to all. The 40 m² existing homes now have insulated ceilings, solar water heaters and more efficient fittings installed and are surrounded by food gardens and streets lined with newly planted fruit and shade trees. It is hoped that the retrofitting of the street will lead to future upgrade to homes surrounding this “legacy project” and beyond. A site tour of the street was held for 150 invited guests on 5 December, as part of the COP-17 activities.

Also as part of COP-17, Brian Wilkinson, CEO, participated as a panelist in the WorldGBC and BioRegional official side event, Voices from South Africa, on 3 December.

On 6 December the GBCSA held a site tour of 4 Star Green Star rated Nedbank Ridgeside in Umhlaga, Durban, with a presentation from the architect.

Overall, the hard work put in by the GBCSA team really paid off with positive press, great networking with other global organizations, and with inroads made on getting the message out about the key role of buildings in mitigating climate change.
