The WorldGBC and the USGBC offered a joint scholarship to Congress and Greenbuild in Toronto to people from WorldGBC member countries with developing economies.

There were four winners from four different regions: Jonathan Chinomona from Africa, Vaibhav Jain from Asia Pacific, Hend Bacha from MENA and Gillian Fraser from the Americas.

Meet Jonathan Chinomona
An Electrical Engineer residing in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Jonathan Chinomona applied for the scholarship with the view that it was imperative for him to learn more about green building, as although it is a relatively new concept in Africa, he could see that it is going to permanently change how business is done in his country - and he was not going to be left behind.

Jonathan came to Toronto in time to attend both Congress and Greenbuild, and took a strategic approach by attending sessions that would specifically help his company and his clients back at home. In describing his experiences he says, “I discovered that the green building industry field is changing rapidly....Green building professionals needs to anticipate, understand, and adapt to changes both in the policy environment and in professional practice.”

Originally from Zimbabwe, Jonathan found a high value in connecting with other green building professionals from around the world, discussing best practices, new tools and emerging trends.

Committed to continuing with green building practices after returning home, Jonathan reflected positively about his Congress experience and noted that, “After the conference, I was not only refreshed, but encouraged, empowered and motivated with the practical and tangible ideas I received from the talented speakers who are passionate about green buildings.”

The WorldGBC congratulates Jonathan and all of the scholarship winners and hopes they continue to build the green building movement in their countries.
