Introduction and Overview

The Middle East and North Africa Region (MENA) is the latest Regional Network to be launched by the World GBC. Conversations around forming this network began at the World GBC Congress in Singapore in September 2010 between the Emirates GBC, Jordan GBC and Qatar GBC.

As with our other Networks, the MENA Network will allow regional GBCs to have a clear regional voice and advocacy position in World GBC forums. The presence of this Network will increase the regional profile of GBCs, attracting further sponsorship, higher attendance at events, and opens the door for dealings with government, as well as spreads interest to countries that do not currently have GBCs.

The proposed formal structure will include a Steering Committee, made up of a Chairman, a deputy Chairman and three representatives for GBCs in the region. The Steering Committee will meet several times during the year (as necessary) in order to develop the work plan, guide regional activities and overlook any working groups.

The first Chairman of the Steering Committee is Dr. Sadek Owianati, Board Member and Founder of the Emirates GBC. The Network as a whole will be made up of one or two representatives of each of the GBC initiatives across the region.

Currently this network is made up of 11 GBCs at various levels of development.

Network Meetings

The first official Network Meeting was held in Dubai and hosted by the Emirates GBC.
