As part of her scholarship fulfillment, Hend Bacha wrote a perspective on her experiences in Toronto and how it will impact her work going forward:
“As a WGBC and USGBC scholarship recipient, I had this unique opportunity to attend both the Congress and the Greenbuild! For me, this week can be summarized in three words: share, learn, network.
Being a new member of MENA Region, Tunisia’s GBC is doing its best to promote sustainability and the energy efficiency, especially after this great opportunity to be a part of this Congress, where I met the other GBCs members and learned from their experiences.
It was also very interesting and challenging to be in contact with the other scholarship awardees - people from Europe, America, Africa, Asia, Australia, carrying with them their dreams, their ambitions, but also fears that we can’t leave a better world to our children. I have learned new things, but also, and most importantly, realized that with such people with same hopes, we can do it! And I still think that in addition to conferences and expo, the best thing was to bring together the ideas, visions, but also cultures. I think this is what remains when we’ll be gone...
After this great experience, it’s time to change things in my country!
As a university lecturer, teaching urban planning in a technologic institute dedicated to building, environment and urbanism, this experience will have a huge impact on my courses and the topics of the masters students that I supervise. Even my conception of sustainability has changed, become more global, more human.
As an architect and urban planner, active member of the Tunisian Association of Urbanists, and the vice president of Tunisia GBC, I will work on spreading more effectively what I have learned in order to increase awareness of green building in Tunisia within the framework of the Tunisian Green Building Council.
Last but not least, as a Tunisian woman, I can say that during the Tunisian pre-revolution period, the country has suffered from bribery in the building industry without respecting environmental issues and urbanistic plans. I believe it's time for Tunisia (a country with limited resources) to be more involved in sustainable development in this post-revolution era.
It's within this context that we are currently establishing the Tunisian Green Building Council in order to build the "Green Tunisian Future."
Thanks to all for each moment shared with you, for the laughs, the thoughts and the HOPE! A great human experience. And we must remember that, "The world will not be destroyed by those who do it wrong, but by those who watch and do nothing." (Albert Einstein)"
