Event Summary

The Green Building Council of South Africa in partnership with the British High Commission isundertaking an energy retrofit project of 30 affordable homes in Cato Manor, Durban. This legacy-project will leave a long lasting impact on the local community and the organized tour and reception provide an opportunity to highlight to an international audience how green building acts as a solution to climate change and can enhance social wellbeing.
Details: Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. Buses leave the Conference Centre at 5:30pm, tour to be followed by a reception for up to 100 government, industry, NGO, and media representatives with local food and community musicians.

In order to highlight exceptional government policies that are accelerating green building around the world, the WorldGBC will award its first Government Leadership Award to one city and two honorable mentions this December during the UN Climate Talks. The Award for “Local Excellence in Green Building Policy” will recognize international best practice in city-level government policy to build green, and reward policies that maximize the opportunity of buildings to mitigate carbon emissions. 
Details: Awards will be presented during a UNFCCC Press Conference at the International Conference Centre. Date TBD

The WorldGBC is partnering with the Climate Action Programme and the U.N. Environment Programme to host the 2011 Climate Action Networking Reception, with over 300 expected attendees from UNEP and UN governing bodies, Ministers and global government representatives, legislators,regulators, NGOs and global business leaders. WorldGBC is participating in a high-level debate on sustainable cities prior to the reception and is also a contributing author to the 5th Climate Action publication.
Details: Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011. The Debate will take place at 5:00pm at the Moses Mabida Stadium followed by the reception at 6:30pm.

The Green Building Council of South Africa will be hosting a tour to the Green Star SA 4-Star Nedbank Ridgeside Office Development in Umhlanga.

Driving a Transformation to Energy Efficient Buildings: a USGBC side-event held in partnership with Johnson Controls will present the Policy Toolkit for Energy Efficient Buildings and approaches to Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in the building sector.

Energy Efficient Buildings and Communities for Sustainable Development: Voices from SouthAfrica: A WorldGBC side event held in partnership with GBCSA, the BioRegional Development Group and others to discuss the green building landscape in South Africa and explore intersections between energy demand, efficient buildings, and climate change.
Details: Saturday, Dec. 3, 2011 6:30pm-8:00pm at the ICC.

Action on Energy Efficiency in the U.S. and on the Global Stage: a USGBC event in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy and U.S. Department of Commerce which will highlight U.S.Government and private sector actions on climate change with a focus on efficient buildings andinclude an overview of domestic initiatives and international cooperation such as the Clean Energy Ministerial.
