Name: European Commission, DG Environment Organisation: European Commission, DG Environment What you're doing: To improve sustainability and drive market demand for better buildings, a new, open source assessment framework, Level(s), has is being launched by the European Commission during World Green Building Week. Level(s) focuses attention on the most important aspects of a building´s performance, providing a simple entry point to what can be a very complex area. Each Level(s) indicator is designed to link the individual building’s impact with the priorities for circular economy at the European level, including: greenhouse gas emissions throughout the building’s life cycle, resource efficient and circular material life cycles, efficient use of water resources, healthy and comfortable spaces, adaptation and resilience to climate change, and whole building life cycle cost and value. The tool will help to embed lifecycle thinking about greenhouse gas emissions across Europe's building and construction sector, accounting for embodied emissions as well as operational emissions. Level(s) has been developed in close collaboration with European Green Building Councils and Regional Partners.
Will help spread the word. Will help lead my community closer to Net Zero. Name: James Drinkwater Organisation: World Green Building Council, Europe Regional Network What you're doing: We will be bringing Green Building Councils and our Regional Partners together with major banks, energy utilities, valuers and universities to work on the EU funded 'Energy Efficiency Mortgages Action Plan' (EeMAP) initiative. The EeMAP Initiative aims to create a standardised “energy efficient mortgage”, according to which building owners are incentivised to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings or acquire an already energy efficient property by way of preferential financing conditions linked to the mortgage. At the heart of the Initiative is the assumption that energy efficiency has a risk mitigation effect for banks as a result of its impact on a borrower’s ability to service their loan and on the value of the property. This means that energy efficient mortgages will represent a lower risk on the balance sheet of banks and could, therefore, qualify for a better capital treatment. Lower capital requirements deliver a strong incentive for banks to enter the market and, as a result, drive a broader incentive chain, in which all stakeholders, including EU citizens, issuers, investors and society as a whole, derive a concrete benefit. To this end, the mortgage and covered bond industries can help to bridge the renovation gap with a private financing initiative, which is independent from but complementary to public funds, tax incentives and utility rebates, and in this way support the EU in meeting its energy savings targets, whilst at the same time creating a strong link between the Capital Markets Union and energy efficiency agendas. Significantly, the EeMAP Initiative represents the first time a group of major banks and mortgage lenders, as well as companies and organisations from the building and energy industries have proactively come together to discuss the private financing of energy efficiency. See: http://energyefficientmortgages.eu/

Duncan will describe how his work with re-used building materials (including the multi-award winning Brighton Waste House completed in 2014) lead him to write this book, a highly illustrated 'atlas’, taking the reader on a journey via four distinct ‘steps’ (recycling, reuse, reduce, closed loop), from a linear economy towards a system emulating the natural world, i.e, a circular economy.  The Atlas features over 25 detailed worldwide case studies describing design exemplars from the worlds of textile and fashion design, product design, interior architecture, architecture and urban design. Duncan will explain how the book can help designers to successfully navigate and exploit the emerging field of resource management and the circular economy. The talk will also show how each 'step' is supplemented with an in depth interview with an expert who is successfully tackling one or more of these challenges that present all designers today. Attendees at this talk will receive a code for a discount on Duncan's Reuse Atlas. About the speaker Duncan Baker-Brown is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Brighton and member of Design Panels: South Downs National Park Design Review Panel, Past Chair & current member of Lewes Architects Advisory Panel, Guest Critic for CABE South East Design Review Panel.
