WorldGBC joins United Nations Global Compact!

Tuesday 28th January 2020

The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) is delighted to announce our participation as a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). Through this partnership, WorldGBC has committed our support to working together on the ten principles of the UNGC, and to publicly report the progression of our global network in key areas of sustainability against the targets of the UN Global Goals, formerly known as the Sustainable Development Goals.

WorldGBC represents a global network of 70 national GBCs, for whom the collaboration with and value contribution from the UNGC is a key opportunity of the partnership. As participants within the UNGC community, GBCs can facilitate networking, knowledge sharing and close collaboration on a range of scales, also engaging their own membership of over 36,000 organisations worldwide. There is also exciting opportunity for GBCs and Regional Networks to engage with the existing national and regional networks run through UNGC. WorldGBC will play a leadership role in reporting the united sustainability efforts of the global network within our reporting commitments to UNGC, and support and encourage member GBCs to also align national and regional strategy against the Global Goals. WorldGBC and UNGC have also identified key areas of high-level partnership to drive innovation and thought leadership from the built environment industry to key global players within our respective communities.

This partnership represents activation of our 2020-22 strategy – WorldGBC’s alignment to the Global Goals. The WorldGBC global network is committed to taking steps to deepen our impact across broader sustainability challenges in the building and construction sector, in support and association with the 17 Global Goals. Three strategic Impact Areas for the WorldGBC global network have been assessed through analytical mapping of the 169 targets and indicators of the Global Goals, and the highest degree of potential direct impact in achieving the targets through the work of our global network. Eleven of the Global Goals were considered directly relevant areas of sustainability for the green building movement, which we encompass under our Impact Areas of Climate Action, Health and Wellbeing and Resources and Circularity. The 11 relevant goals are: 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 17.

Bringing together our global network of approximately 70 national Green Building Councils, 36,000 members across the world, and industry leading corporate partners we believe WorldGBC brings a unique voice from the buildings and construction industry to the UNGC coalition. We are delighted to continue working with influential NGOs and the private sector.  We look forward to deepening our impact across broader areas of sustainability in partnership with our fellow members of the UNGC.
