Will learn more about the issue. Will help spread the word. Will take action for greener living in my home and community. Name: Bahaa Alnassr Allah Organisation: Self employed - Architect What you're doing: I am an architect with 5 years experience in the field of architecture. I am working on developing my understanding of sustainable architecture in order to exploit all new innovation technologies and tools to create a new sustainable built environment that influences people’s daily lifestyles. During my undergraduate study at Damascus University, I came across the idea of sustainable architecture. It became an interest of mine and led to me to explore the topic further through research and experimenting with environmental simulation software, such as Autodesk Ecotect Analysis, Ladybug and Honeybee, which I relied on in my final-year project, the Marine Research Centre in Latakia, Syria, to help me in evaluating and improving the buildings’ environmental performance. The project was designed to cause minimal environmental impacts by applying innovative renewable energy technologies, and using materials, water and other resources efficiently. Throughout my professional life, I have regularly kept up with the latest sustainable techniques to be applied in the projects. However, opportunities were not always available to apply this knowledge, due to lack of public awareness about the importance of sustainability. Despite the challenges, I still managed as much as possible to integrate these ideas into the projects I work on. For example, in a project where I was involved in building an outdoors play area for the American Community School in Beirut (ACS), I used materials that do not require maintenance or get affected by weather. Another example is when I designed small, modern living units in Dmit, Lebanon. I used tight insulated brick walls to improve the insulation of the units by providing an airtight envelope that allowed to save almost 10% on energy efficiency. As such, I have persistently tried to improve my architectural knowledge and skills through, even by attending workshops and events, whenever given the opportunity. Taking the “Ecodesign for Cities and Suburbs” online course by the University of British Columbia was one way to enrich my knowledge. This course showed me how to integrate architecture, urban planning and the conservation of natural systems to create a sustainable built environment. I learned the conceptual framework of eco-design that enabled me to understand the tools and techniques for policy development and implementation. “Practices for Sustainable Architecture” is another online course that gave an idea about the organization of different rating systems including LEED, BREEAM, LBC and Passivhaus. It also explained in details the Integrated Project Delivery with a special emphasis on collaborative design practices to achieve sustainable projects in a tough economic framework. “Green Architecture” course at the Order of Engineers in Beirut also explained how to achieve sustainable buildings by applying different techniques in water management, natural ventilation and daylight, air quality and human health. In addition to these courses, I enjoy exploring and using different modelling and visualizing tools that help me to develop and present my work, including some advanced computational and parametric software, such as Revit, Rhino and Grasshopper.

The topics will focus on the sustainability strategies desired by the investor and put in the field by the designer as example for the recovery of rainwater, the use of electricity only as primary energy (no gas network), deriving mainly from renewable energy produced by photovoltaic system on site, and sustainable mobility with the installation of columns for charging electric cars . After eight years, we will ask those who live in these residences, healthier and more energy efficient, to tell us about the perceived benefits and other actions carried out in their home as a contribution to the fight against climate change.

In fact, part of the energy needed to carry out the construction site activities comes from renewable energy, and more precisely to a photovoltaic system present on site. The sustainable strategies put in place by the designer are added, also to the wishes of the owner of the house: the reduction of the use of water in indoor and outdoor environments, the use of materials with low environmental impact and a careful design of permeable green areas with the planting of native plants.

Regular tours for social housing providers and industry experts provide the opportunity to ask any questions on a guided tour of 10 hard to heat homes made fit for 2050 using the award-winning Energiesprong approach. Why is Energiesprong attracting support from Europe’s social housing providers? Typically a super-insulated second skin is added to make a terrace of older homes much easier to heat. New onsite renewable energy systems will provide for most of the residents’ year round space heating, hot water and electricity needs. The homes get cosier. Energy bills get spread more evenly thanks to an energy plan. Superb energy performance isn’t just expected – it is guaranteed for 30 years. In future, with industrialisation and scale, we expect the whole life cost savings to fund the work. This is the theory. Find out how it works in practice on this visit. Nottingham City Homes and Melius Homes have delivered this - the UK’s first Energiesprong pilot. The last tour was 19 Sep. Name: Jake Attwood-Harris Event: Reducing embodied carbon through measurement and visualisation: The Hawkins\Brown Emission Reduction Toolkit Date: September 24, 2018 Time: 8:00am Address: New London Architecture, Store Street, London, WC1E 7BT URL: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/hawkinsbrown-emission-reduction-toolkit-launch-tickets-49424070726 Name: Both calculating and visualising embodied carbon and the impact of this on lifecycle carbon analysis has historically been a complex task. Hawkins\Brown has worked in partnership with the UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE), based within The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment, to create the Hawkins\Brown Emission Reduction Toolkit. The tool plugs into Revit and enables the designer to quickly test the embodied carbon emissions of different material options at any time during the design process. This allows easy comparison of elemental design options as well as assisting in decision making related to retrofit or rebuild. We have used this approach to support the retention of existing and heritage buildings where the case is not often clear. Hawkins\Brown have also used the tool to claim exemplary material credits in the BREEAM New Construction 2014 form on one project to date and are delighted that the BRE are supporting us at the event. We are hosting this event as part of World Green Building Week to launch the tool by presenting the benefits we have found from this analysis, lessons learnt and an industry-expert panel discussion about what the future might hold. 08:00 Coffee and pastries 08:30 Hawkins\Brown and UCL present the Hawkins\Brown Emission Reduction Toolkit (H\B:ERT) 09:00 Panel discussion & questions 10:00 Coffee and networking Panel Discussion The built environment is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions, but people will always need homes, schools and offices. How can the built environment industry tackle this question and can this tool help designers make more informed decisions?
